Manding Leather Village is an area situated around 11 km south of Kraton Yogyakarta that displays hundreds of shops specializing in leather products, from jackets, wallets, shoes, bags, belts to leather accessories. Around 500 meters along the sides of the road of the main street, stand tens of shops that sell mostly leather products. It is the center of leather crafts in Yogyakarta. Just like how Kasongan is famous for their pottery handicrafts, Manding is the same for leather products. The village can be reached from the main highway to Parangtritis Beach. There are various road signs that point to the area in Jl. Parangtritis.

Manding Village reached its glory in the 1970s and 1980s, where original leather products from Manding was demanded by many countries. The products of Manding is usually exported to western countries such as America and France. Today, due to market demand, the quantity of original leather has reduced, and in return, many products are mixed with natural resources such as water hyacinth, rushes, pandan leaves, and others. You can also find some of Manding’s products in Malioboro or Beringharjo market, for a higher price of course.

The products of Manding is known to have good quality, although the price is considerably cheap for a similar item found elsewhere. Leather is the main commodity in the village, therefor it has been the main livelihood for most of the residents to sell leather products. The products, besides having displayed in Manding, is also advertised by the government through Gabusan Market. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been very much preserved by the government, so not much tourists are able to locate this particular area.

Mirota Batik is one of the most known Batik and Handicraft Center in Yogyakarta. The big old family-owned shop is located near the end of Malioboro Street, just North of the Presidential Palace. There’s actually another branch located in Kaliurang KM. 15.5, but the one reviewed here will be the center at Malioboro. When visiting Yogyakarta, it’s a mistake if you don’t come to this place. Upon entering the shop, you will feel the warmth of Javanese Traditional atmosphere accompanied by Javanese traditional music. You can find almost any items concerning Yogyakarta, or Java at this place. The items provided in Mirota Batik ranges from Batik and other clothes, to souvenirs, handicrafts, and antiques. Certain items can only be found here, not available in the stalls along Malioboro.

Although most of the items can be found along the stalls throughout Malioboro, the price can be as cheap, or even cheaper than the same items sold outside the shop. Not too many people notice this though, because most people have a certain mind that items sold in shops, especially tagged items, are more expensive than ones in stalls. Well, this thought must be thrown away when you’re at Malioboro because the price range between items offered in stalls along Malioboro and the items in Mirota Batik can somewhat shock you, even when you have sorten out the price after bargaining!

Mirota Batik is a highly recommended place to shop for original Javanese concerning items. Not only are there lots of complete choices of items, the price is also reasonable with the quality given.

Wedang Ronde (or commonly mentioned as just “ronde”) is another original Javanese traditional beverage apart from dawet and jamu. The term “Wedang” actually means “a type of drink”, while “ronde” is the main ingredient in the beverage. What is wedang ronde exactly? Wedang ronde is a beverage originating from Yogyakarta that consists of ginger water and ronde. Ronde, as the main pair for the ginger water, is a dough of rice flour, with palm sugar and crushed peanuts stuffed in the middle, made into a round shape, resembling a large marble that is immersed into the ginger water.

The two components (ginger water and ronde) are the main ingredients of Wedang Ronde, although you can add other ingredients into the bowl, such as slices of bread, kolangkaling, or nuts. To create the ginger water, all you have to do is boil a mixture of water, ginger, sugar (or palm sugar) and lemongrass until the mixture is boiled. After that, dip the dough of Ronde in boiled water until it floats and then lift the ronde and put the dough into the wedang. The finished ingredients are usually served in a bowl, added with other custom ingredients mentioned above.

Wedang Ronde is usually sold in carts all over Yogyakarta. You can easily find the beverage around the North Square, South Square, Malioboro and streets near the Keraton for a very cheap price, only around Rp.3000. The beverage is conveniently consumed during rainy season, or in cold weather because the peculiar taste of the ginger water gives our body a warm sensation of its own.

Yogyakarta is a city of tourism, not only for foreign tourists but also local ones. And in every tourism city, there’s got to be something identical to the city, whether it’s a food, souvenir, buildings, etc. In Yogyakarta, one of the most identical thing (in terms of food ) is Bakpia.

Bakpia is the most famous food souvenir typical of Yogyakarta. Bakpia is a type of pastry, with a small round shape, made from various ingredients (as the stuffing) and wrapped in crusty wheat fluor dough as the skin. The original main ingredient for Bakpia is actually mung beans added with sugar, vaniila, and salt. But due to the strict competition of the producers and the various demand of flavors from the market, nowadays Bakpia has various flavors to choose from, such as cheese, chocolate, durian, blueberry, and much more. Besides the main flavor, the taste of Bakpia is sweet and tender from the crusty skin, a typical Javanese taste for food.

The famous are for Bakpia Industry in Yogyakarta is called Pathuk. That’s why sometimes Bakpia is also mentioned as Bakpia Pathuk for most local people. Pathuk area is located West from Malioboro. Around the area, there are different branded shops and producers that sells Bakpia, each having its own taste of the food. Usually a box (containing 20-25 bakpias) of bakpia is priced at Rp 20.000- Rp 25.000. But some shops may sell for a cheaper price or even higher, depending on the brand and quantity of boxes to buy.

Usually, tourist who go to Yogyakarta buy bakpia to share with their friends of family in their originating town, since Bakpia is very uncommon to be sold outside Java, especially Yogyakarta. Bakpia is nice to enjoy with a cup of warm tea, especially fresh bakpia which is still warm. Enjoying it together while chatting with family or friends is also a way to consume it.
