Malam Selikuran (Selikuran Night)

Malem Selikuran is a traditional ceremony held by Keraton Surakarta Hadiningrat and Solo citizens to commemorate the Nuzulul Quran, which is always celebrated at the 21st of Ramadhan (a holy month in the Islamic Calender). The ceremony starts with the procession of 1.000 tumpeng ( rice arranged in a huge pile forming a cone shape) from Pagelaran to Sriwedari. Following behind the procession are the soldiers of Keraton Surakarta and the march of 21 lamp posts symbolizing “Malam Selikuran”.

The enthronement celebration of SISKS Paku Buwono XIII. The ceremony shows the sacred dance, Bedaya Ketawang, a very special dance that can only be played by skilled dancers. During the ceremony, there is also an aristrocratic title granting from the Prince of Keraton Surakarta to those who have given their service to the Palace, as a form of honor.

The word sekaten comes from an Islamic term, Syahadatain, or the two sentences of Syahadat (or commonly known as the two sentences of faith to Allah and Prophet Muhammad as His messenger) . The ceremony that aims to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW is enlivened by many performances and traditional fair that sells souvenirs and craft. There is also an heirloom exhibition in Pagelaran of Keraton Surakarta. Sekaten is Closed by the procession of Gunungan that starts from Keraton Surakarta to Masjid Agung.
