Two days before Garebeg (the main ceremony), tumplak wajik is held in the yard of the Magangan Kraton. It is the beginning of preparations of Gunungan, a mountain shaped offering of food made from vegetables, fruits and eggs. Wajik, sticky rice cake, is a part of gunungan.

The main ceremony Garebeg is held on the 12^th day, it starts at 07.30 and is preceded by a parade of the palace guard from Kemandungan to alun-alun utara. Gunungan are carried out of the palace at 10:00 and greeted by a salvo of gunshots, the Gunungan leads the procession to the Great Mosque where it will be blessed by the ulamas. The Gunungan then leaves the Mosque and is grabbed by people waiting in the mosque yard. People believe that parts of the gunungan will bless the villagers with a good life. Farmers often plant these in their fields, believing that it will keep them from disaster. The Garebeg ceremony is also held on Syawal 1^th (tenth month in Javanese calendar) and on Besar 10^th (the last month of the Javanese calendar).

For new born babies, the placenta is buried in the yard of the families house, collective prayer with the whole family and neighbourhood and every night for 40 days asking God’s protection for the mother and the baby, so they will be safe from any evil spirits.

When the baby is 35 days-old, the family will have another ceremony called selapanan (selapan is 35 days-Javanese calendar) to thank God and to thank the whole family and neighbourhood for their prayers, during the ceremony the baby’s hair will be cut a little by each of the elders of the family. The family then delivers food to all of the neighbours.

Commemorating Javanese New Year in the first day of the Sura first month, a labuhan ceremony is held on the southern beaches (Parangtritis – Parangkusumo, Pandansimo, Samas, Baron). On New Years Eve night, people arrange torch light processions and gambyong dances, throwing offerings in to the sea at 00.00 follows this.

Labuhan itself comes from the word “labuh” which means to throw offerings in to the sea, a river or a volcano’s crater, this is a dedication to supernatural power. The Labuhan ceremony is intended to avoid an unexpected interference from supernatural powers. Labuhan is held as a supporting ceremony to occasions such as the Sultans coronation anniversary and entering the sacred Sura month.

A ceremony to purifying ancient heirlooms is arranged by Dusun Keceme people at Suroloyo hill, Samigaluh Kulonprogo. Two heirlooms, a spear named Kyai Manggolo Murti and an umbrella named Kyai Manggolo Dewo, are gifts of the Kraton Jogja. The procession bringing the heirlooms starts at Keceme eider’s house and finishes at the spring Sendang Kawidodaren, where the heirlooms are washed and purified. People also carry in the procession a “gunungan” (mountain shaped food offering), folk dances are also performed.

Beside being the home of Sri Paku Alam IX, the Pura is often used to host traditional events, such as the Garebeg Ceremony, the Offering Ceremony on Glagah Beach, Heirloom Cleansing in the month of Suro, Javanese Traditional Fashion Show, and many more.
