Kraton Batik Museum Yogyakarta is a museum that displays a collection of batik cloths and equipments dating from the era of Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII until Sultan Hamenku Buwono X. It is situated on Jl. Rotowijayan No.1, an area which is still considered a part of the Kraton Complex. The Batik collection are mostly those created by a member of the Kraton Royal Family, or their royal servants (abdi dalem). However, some of the collections are tributes coming from Batik keepers around Yogyakarta and other places.

Kraton Batik Museum Yogyakarta was inaugurated on October 31 2005 by the governor of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X. Each collection of Batik designs in the museum have their own remarkable markings concerning an event in the live of a Javanese. For example, the Batik Truntum design is a batik style which is often used for traditional ceremonies and rituals, whereas Batik Nagasari is used in weddings. Having Batik related collections as the main feature, the museum also provides insights on Batik tools and the making of batk. Items such as a wooden mahogany cup, lerak, and srigading flowers are completed with preservatives and dye for the Batik process. Several antique household equipments are also displayed, such as the old-fashioned iron and antique bicycles.

The art of Batik is a heritage that has been passed from generations before the present generation. The practice of Batik art is not merely drawing and painting on top of a particular cloth, its also an ethical and aesthetical way of showing the skills of a Javanese. It is a very important culture for Javanese people and it will be inherited for many generations to come.

Mirota Batik is one of the most known Batik and Handicraft Center in Yogyakarta. The big old family-owned shop is located near the end of Malioboro Street, just North of the Presidential Palace. There’s actually another branch located in Kaliurang KM. 15.5, but the one reviewed here will be the center at Malioboro. When visiting Yogyakarta, it’s a mistake if you don’t come to this place. Upon entering the shop, you will feel the warmth of Javanese Traditional atmosphere accompanied by Javanese traditional music. You can find almost any items concerning Yogyakarta, or Java at this place. The items provided in Mirota Batik ranges from Batik and other clothes, to souvenirs, handicrafts, and antiques. Certain items can only be found here, not available in the stalls along Malioboro.

Although most of the items can be found along the stalls throughout Malioboro, the price can be as cheap, or even cheaper than the same items sold outside the shop. Not too many people notice this though, because most people have a certain mind that items sold in shops, especially tagged items, are more expensive than ones in stalls. Well, this thought must be thrown away when you’re at Malioboro because the price range between items offered in stalls along Malioboro and the items in Mirota Batik can somewhat shock you, even when you have sorten out the price after bargaining!

Mirota Batik is a highly recommended place to shop for original Javanese concerning items. Not only are there lots of complete choices of items, the price is also reasonable with the quality given.

Prawirotaman is an area around 5 km to the south of the Keraton which provides many low-budget lodgings as well as cafés and shops of various typical Yogyakartan items and souvenirs. The area has been well known for its lodging and hotel business since the 19th century. The history began when a palace officioal, named Prawirotomo was granted a piece of land by the Sultan. The land was later named after him, Prawirotaman. Prawirotomo had three sons – the late Werdoyoprawiro, Suroprawiro, and Mangunprawiro – who all pursued the batik business. It was one of the few batik producing centers in Yogyakarta at that time. As the tourist industry grew quickly in the late 1960s, the brothers abandoned the batik business and invested their money on hotel business. Since then, the family has been running more than 60% of the hotels in the area.
