At the past, when the civilization was not as modern as now, the Javanese made their own toys. Toys were made from materials that they found in their surrounding. Materials like coconut fiber, wood and bamboo were most used. With those materials, the people were able to make toys like car, boat, and gasingan.

Well, here I want to tell about a legendary toy that has name Gasingan or Gasing. Today, this toy is rare; it is not played by the children anymore. Kids prefer to play video games, watch TV or RC car than play gasingan. Moreover, many kids do not know if this toy exists. The only place that we can find this toy is at tourism place around Yogyakarta. I found it at Kraton and at Gembira Loka zoo. The price for this toy is cheap, it is about IDR4, 000. It will be cheaper when we can bid well.
This toy is made from bamboo and wood. As we can see at the picture, the bamboo for the tube is about ten centimeter with wood board to cover each pole. A bamboo stick that is about twenty centimeters placed in the middle as the wick so that it can stand when turning. A sided hole is made on the bamboo. This hole will create sound ‘kwoooooo’ when it is played. A line and a small lath of bamboo are used to play the toy.

Gudeg is a concoction of young jackfruit, coconut milk and other local condiments such as garlic and coriander. The color is reddish brown, as the result of the jackfruit, coconut water, and palm sugar, boiled for several hours. Some people are said to add some young teakwood foliages into the jackfruit pot in its early cooking stage, to attain the precise coloration.

Gudeg is usually served on a clay plate, on top of a sheet of banana leaves. Sometimes the vendor just folds the banana leaf, makes it tight it with a sharp piece of palm leaf rib, to form a half-cone-pot called ‘pincuk’.

Many people prefer to eat their gudeg in a ‘pincuk’ because banana leaf produces an appetizing aroma when the hot temperature from the cooking affects it. The ‘pincuk’ is big enough to hold a portion of rice, gudeg and its tasty accessories. A number of options are prepared on the table, for instance: fried chicken, chicken curry with rich coconut milk sauce called ‘santan areh’, hot ‘krecek’ (beef skin) curry, tofu, tempe, and chili sauce.

The gudeg itself is processed in a big clay pot. The traditional method suggests to have the food stirred with a wooden stick. No metal material – especially aluminums – should be used, to keep the taste specific as the food remains healthy.

The traditional wooden kitchen where people cook this cuisine is a huge, dark and smoky place. People used to place the giant clay pot on the old fashioned brick stove and make fire from wood. Of course cooking this way would be more tiring and time consuming, even though many locals still apply this method in their spacious village residences. In contrast, most housewives downtown prefer newer utensils like gas or electric stove and stainless boiling pan.

On Maliboro Street, the most famous boulevard to visit in Yogyakarta, most gudeg outlets have their guests sit at ease on a lesehan dining. The eateries are small, outdoor stalls, on the sidewalk. Vendors load their clay pots and jugs on a three-wheeled pedicab or horse chariots called andong and started to set up their place around 7 p. m. They may open the stall overnight, or until about 3 o’clock in the morning.

This market is located in Kampung Ngasem and Village Park, District Palace, about 400 meters west of Yogyakarta Sultanate Palace.

Historically, the area was once a lake Ngasem market that is often used second lane walking around to see the beauty of the palace from outside the fort. However, many times walking the lake was converted to settlements and in the middle of the village into a market that specialized in selling birds. The existence Ngasem market itself can also give important information on what is considered prestigious in the past. After the horse as a means of transportation and dagger as a weapon, the bird is in third place as a measure of social status.

To begin with, gamelan was used as an accompaniment to dance, ballet, puppet shows and traditional ceremonies. Today gamelan is normally performed as an orchestra in hotels or restaurants to create a Javanese nuance. Gamelan is not only a musical performance, but also has singers, both male and female. Male singers are called wiraswara, and female singers are waranggana. In this show, the singeers do not performed as vocalists, but as part of the instruments. Gamelan is also called uyon-uyon.

Sapto Raharjo a Jogjanese musician, who is internationally well known, uses gamelan as the base for his works of art. He combines gamelan with other traditional Indonesian music as well as Indian and western music. Raharjo is actively improving the younger generation’s appreciation for gaelan by conducting a Gamelan Gaul Festival (Gaul means pops). Sapto also sparked the idea of an International Gamelan Festival that has now taken place in Jogja over five time. Gmelan musicians from around the world attend this festival. Last year, the festival was conducted in July. You can meet Sapto Raharjo at Radio Geronimo on Gayam, where he holds a position as one of the radio managers.
