Pandan Simo Beach is one of the sacred Southern beaches of Yogyakarta that is located in Poncosari Village, Srandakan, Bantul. It lies near Progo River and is known as the most western beach in the Southern area. Other beaches near Pandan Simo, include Trisik Beach and Glagah Beach.

The name Pandan Simo is originated from the Javanese term “pandan” which means pandanus tree and “simo” which means tiger. Te beach is considered sacred because it is often used as a site to perform various traditional ritual/ceremony. One of such ceremony is called Merti Dusun, a ceremony that is performed by local residents to show their gratitude to God for their well fortune. Another ceremony, Labuhan, is carried out by giving offerings to the sea for having decent catch throughout the year.

Pandan Simo Beach is not the beach suitable for swimming. The rough waves, deep water and coral reefs that are spread through the coast of the beach are the reasons why it shouldn’t be a place to swim. Don’t be disappointed though, because the panorama of the beach and its surrounding is a beautiful scenery that can satisfy your visit to the beach. You can also shop for fish and various sea animals on Pandan Simo Beach for a very considerable price.

Wediombo Beach is a wide bay with white sand and clear blue saltwater located in Jepitu Village, Gunung Kidul Regency around 40 km southeast of Wonosari. Wediombo is derived from two Javanese words, naming wedi (which means sand) and ombo (which means wide). Although when combined it implies a beach having wide area of sand, in reality, the area is much smaller than that of several other white sanded beaches in Yogyakarta, such as Glagah Beach and Parangtritis Beach. The narrow area is due to the beach having enclosed by coral hills on the east and west part of the sands. It is more appropriate being “the wide bay” since the flanking coral hills makes the beach wider than common bays.

Wediombo Beach is located on a low altitude, which makes it available to be seen on higher grounds. In fact, you can see that the beach is surrounded by crop fields and houses of local residents if you view it from a higher ground. Wediombo Beach possesses a much clearer blue sandwater than many other beaches in the area dut to it having low quantity of pollution. The white sand is also beautiful with ornaments of seashells and other sea creatures in small objects where you can pick up and bring home as souvenir.

Wediombo Beach offers another unique experience for tourists other than the beautiful panorama, which is fishing on top of a high coral cliff. Local inhabitants and tourists have been doing this activity for quite a while, and they believe that the spot is very strategic in getting big fishes. However, to reach the high coral cliff is not an easy task for beginners. It should take approximately an hour, or more if you are not used to the path. For those who doesn’t want to go through the trouble, you can simply buy the fishes that local fishermen have caught during that day for as cheap as Rp. 3000. If you like, you can also have local people cook the fish according to your desired seasoning for a cheap price.

If you are lucky, you might witness yourself a traditional ceremony called Ngalangi Ceremony. The ceremony is held annually and the objective is somewhat familiar with that of labuhan ceremony, that is to express gratitude to God for good fortune and good catches throughout the year. The ceremony is carried out initially by spreading a fishnet that is made from gawar tree called gawar. Gawar is used to trap and catch fishes that are washed away by waves. After the fishes are cought, they are then cleaned and cooked. However, some are returned back to the sea while most are made into dishes that are shared with local families. This ceremony is also know as kenduri besar (great shared meals).

Kukup Beach is a white sand beach located on the southern area of Yogyakarta, to be exact Kemadang village, Tanjungsari. The beach is located around 40 km away from Yogyakarta city. It is considered one of the series of beaches in the southern area other than Baron Beach, Krakal Beach, Sundak Beach, Wedi Ombo Beach and others. They each have the same characteristics other than their location, which is the possession of white sand. It is believed that the white sand of the southern beaches are remnants of rock fragments and pieces of animal skins and shellfishes.

Kukup Beach is known for its varieties of fishes and sea animals, including rare sea biotas such as the green turtle. On the east side of the beach, exists a coral stone that’s connected with a bridge. From here you can enjoy beautiful panoramic scene of the sea and mountains that surround the beach. The coral stones and cave-like stones, which shelters ornamental fishes and plants, around the beach is also a feature you can use to accompany your photos or activities at the beach.

Another interesting facility here is the fish market that sells fishes cought by locals from the area. To complete the facility, there are also seafood restaurants where you can have your purchased fishes from the market cooked with your desired seasoning. Kukup Beach is also host for traditional ceremony that is conducted every month of Suro.

Krakal Beach is a long white sand beach located 65 km away from Yogyakarta city, in Ngestirejo village, Tanjungsari sub-region, Gunung Kidul Regency. Krakal Beach is considered one of the longest and most beautiful beaches out of the series of beaches that stretches along the southern part of Yogyakarta. Other southern beaches distancing not too far away from Krakal is Kukup Beach, Baron Beach and Sundak Beach. The spacious white sand and textures of coral reefs is the most interesting attraction that the beach can give to its visitors. In fact, Krakal is scheduled to be the biggest tourism beach in Yogyakarta, similar to that of Nusa Dua in Bali.

If you take a drive to Krakal Beach, you will find yourself surrounded by beautiful natural limestone hills alternated with terraced rocks along your journey, which gives an enchanting scenary along the road. These enchanting feature is what local people call karst area. Krakal Beach is known as a lowland beach which can create a beach horizon from the sunshine. According to geologists, Krakal Beach was once situated on the base of the sea. But due to elevation process, the beach is slowly lifted, until its current position. The coral reefs that is seen on the beach, was used as home to sea animals during that period. The everlasting waves that occurs at the beach is also an image that one can find amusing. All the features and also location of the beach makes it an ideal place for sun bathing, a favorite activity done by foreign tourist at the beach. Be careful when you take a swim at the beach since there are many small reefs and rocks that is unseen from out of the water.

There are also supporting facilities near Krakal for its visitors. Several cheap resorts and also restaurants are available in just walking distance from the beach. Besides that, there are numerous spots where you can view both the stunning scene of the sunrise and sunset.

Glagah Beach is a multi functioned beach located around 40 km southwest of downtown Yogyakarta, on the village of Glagah, Temon Sub-disctrict Kulonprogo regency. Other than the beach itself, the wide coastal land of Glagah has other facilities that can be enjoyed. One of them is fishing as there are several fishing spots at the area. Glagah Beach can also be used as a camping site. Besides that, the extensive dry land around the beach is conveniently used as an agro tourism site for specific plants, such as dragon fruit, rosella plant, and others. Not only can you buy harvested crops, you can also observe the cultivation process of the plants ( on certain periods) and experience an agro tourism of your own.

Glagah beach is situated on the mouth of Serang River. You can see overgrown palm trees placed amongst the sides of the beach. The vast terrain without huge coral reefs gives its viewers a neverending sight of the sea. Any area you stand in or go to in the beach will still give beautiful unlimited coastal scenary. In addition to the beautiful coastal scenery, Glagah Beach also provides another facility, which is the motocross circuit located at the seaside of the beach. Moreover, the asphalted road connecting Glagah and other Southern beaches in Yogyakarta can be utilized for fun bike activity.

One of the most interesting feature of Glagah Beach is the long and captivating lagoon that divides the area into two parts. The first is the agro tourism area where is planted many spesies of dryland crops and the other is the sand dune area which directly borders with the beach. The sand dune area can be reached from the lagoon by a bamboo bridge that’s built on the edge of the lagoon. On this lagoon is where local inhibitants make their living by renting wooden and bamboo boats (also called gethek) . These boats are usually the main transportation used to take you from the sand dune area to the agro tourism area on the other side of the beach. There are also duck shaped rowing boats and also canoe boats that can also be occupied near the lagoon.
On a fixed occasion, Glagah Beach is used as a venue for presenting a special traditional ritual, named Labuhan. The ritual is conducted on the first day of the month of Suro (the first month in Javanese Calender). On this ceremony, the performers of the ritual presents certain offerings to the sea as an express of gratitude for their fortune during the previous year.

Depok Beach is a unique beach about 1,5 km from Parangtritis Beach that is infamous mainly for its sea culinary tourism. Unlike many other beaches in Yogyakarta, Depok Beach hosts a Fish Market and Seafood Culinary Restaurants that has become its primary attraction to visitors.

The history of the activities that deal mostly with fish, started from 1997, where some fishermen from Cilacap came to Depok to catch some fishes. The local residents at first didn’t realize the potential that their beach contains. It turned out the fishermen made very good catches since their arrival. Their result inspired the local residents to also become fishermen, and since then most of them had made fishing their main livelihood.

The fish industry at Depok has developed since then, and today over 1000 kg of fishes are sold everyday. Fishing is done almost throughout the year, usually by motorboat. The most distinguished feature of Depok beach is not the beach itself, but the Fish Trading Market. The Fish Trading Market is a seafood market that is open from early morning almost everyday in Depok Beach. The market provides all the catches that the fishermen made throughout the day. There, you can find various kinds of fresh fishes such as tuna, snapper, catfish, skipjack, bawal, nila, and much more. Other sea catches sold at the market includes shrimps, squids, oyster, lobster, and crabs. The catches are sold at various prices per kilogram. Similar to most markets in Yogyakarta, you can try to bargain for a cheaper price.

Besides the Fish Trading Market, there are also many seafood restaurants around the beach to choose from. What’s unique is that you can choose to have your fishes that was purchased at the market be cooked at any one of the restaurants. That way you can ensure yourself that the fish is still fresh since it was bought in the market. The cooking price is around Rp. 5000 – Rp. 7000 per kg. You can have them fried, grilled, spiced, and more. If you don’t intend to buy something at the market, don’t worry because the restaurants also provide the fishes.

Parangkusumo Beach is a beach that can be considered more sacred than it is a leisural site to the residents of Yogyakarta. Despite having its own name, it is still a part of Parangtritis Beach. The sacred site is distanced at 30 km south of downtown Yogyakarta. Local residents believe that the beach is the entrance gate of the Mystical Kingdom of the South Sea, a place where The Queen of the South Seas, Nyi Roro Kidul, resides. During certain occasion, an offering is given to the beach from local communities as well as representatives from Keraton Yogyakarta. The reason for this tradition is because Parangkusumo Beach has long been a symbol for the relation and authority between Keraton Yogyakarta and the Queen of the South Sea.

You can feel the sacredness of the beach as you enter the main gate. Scattered flowers, sets of offerings and the scent of incenses are amongst the things that one will often find during their visit to the beach. Based on the tradition, on the 30th of Rejeb ( name of a month on the Javanese calender) is held the sacred ritual where certain offerings are given to the Queen of the South Seas. The offerings (also known as Labuhan) consists of flowers, food, clothes, and cuttings from the current Sultan’s fingernails and hair. The ceremony is operated during a Kliwon, a specific period of days according to Javanese calendar, when people come to visit the rest houses around Parangkusumo to meditate and achieve spiritual tranquility. A legend remarks that a particular stone at Parangkusumo Beach that resulted from a post-volcanic activity, known also as Love Stone, is believed to be the place where Panembahan Senopati, a legendary king of the Mataram Kindom, and the Queen of the South Seas met to confer about certain occasions. From the meeting, they came to agree upon a testament. In the agreement, The Queen promised to protect Panembahan Senopati along with his descendants and kindom provided Senopati agreed to become her spouse. Senopati also agreed on the request provided the bond must not yield any offspring. The contract between the two figures is what strengthens the link between Mataram Kindom (currently becoming Kesultanan Yogyakarta) and the Queen of the South Seas.

Besides the sacred ritual and tradition, visitors can also enjoy the beauty of the beach and the breeze of the seashore on horse cart. There are also numerous food stands (warongs) where visitors can buy food and drink. The beach is also often used as a praying site for different religional backgrounds.

Siung Beach is another beautiful beach in the Southern Area of Yogyakarta, Gunung Kidul to be exact, where there exists a chain of beaches like Baron and Sundak. It is situated about 70 km from downtown Yogyakarta.

What makes this beach so different from others in the Southern area is the possession of hundreds of climbing sites around the cliffs that surround the beach. The state of the beach that lies between 2 mountains, comfortably results in the presence of cliffs. There are approximately 250 climbing routes available throughout the cliffs surrounding Siung. For people that enjoys adventurous rock climbing activities, this site is just perfect for your skill development. For shelter, there are many camping grounds near the cliff for tent usage. If you feel reluctant to set up camp, there is a wooden stage house nearby that enables a better view of the beach and its surroundings. Of course you have to pay a rate to use the stage house, but the price is considerably cheap compared to the lifetime experience and astonishing view.

Besides the hundreds of climbing routes it offers, Siung Beach also possesses beautiful coral reefs both in the eastern and western part of the beach. The reefs is essential in making a more beautiful scenary of nature , and is also used as a border mark between beaches in the area.

An interesting occasion that happens often in Siung is the appearance of long-tailed monkeys coming down from the cliffs to shore. This in fact has to do with the naming of the coral reefs as “fang of the monkeys”.
